Chapter Ten

Hood pulled over her head, Seramar first went to her own stable. She took a route that kept her concealed by the lush shrubbery planted throughout the castle compound. Once inside the building, she hurried to her sleeping quarters and grabbed the scraps of parchment that bore the riddle of Glacier Glas…and thanked the gods she’d had the foresight to secrete those pieces beneath one of the room’s rugs.

The sight of the bed, its luxurious covers and pillows a jumbled mass, tugged at her. Impulsively, Sera bent over it and buried her face in the pillow where Renn’s head had rested. She bunched the down comforter in her hands and held that to her face as well. Yes, she could still smell the massage oils that had scented Renn’s body, could still detect the subtler but more provocative aroma of the man himself.

How she longed to be with him…

For a fleeting moment, tears stung Sera’s eyes. She didn’t know why. She only knew she must banish all sentiment, whatever its source, and focus on the task at hand.

She must get to the Cauldron of Keridwen without being recognized.

“Well, I now know why that guard is outside the door,” Gonden said drolly. “You’re at the center of a royal feud. What a hot piece of property you must be to have two princesses salivating over your, uh…endowments.”

He and Renn sat in the cooking area, at a table that was used both for food preparation and sometimes dining. Renn stared at the scarred tabletop, his mind churning. “I’d find it amusing too,” he muttered, “if it weren’t so important for me to get out of here.”

Another one of Trelkiny’s studs suddenly burst through the back door, a man with curly ginger hair. Renn couldn’t remember all their names. He was simply too preoccupied.

“She was just here, talking to the guard,” the man said breathlessly.

“Trelkiny?” Gonden asked.

“Yes. She wanted to know if her sister had come by. The guard said no, he hadn’t seen her.”

Renn and Gonden exchanged quick glances. The latter knew he was to keep quiet about Seramar’s visit.

“This all has to do with you, doesn’t it?” The redheaded man pointed at Renn.

“I’m afraid so.”

“It appears the elder princess stole him from the younger,” Gonden explained, “who allegedly stole him from the elder in the first place.” He sat back in the chair and stretched, then scratched the center of his bare chest. “Anyway, they both want him.”

The other man’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Well, regardless of whom he belongs to—”

“I belong to no one!” Renn spat out. Slamming his hands on the table, he bolted up from the bench, sorely tempted to slam his fist into something.

The third man looked startled. His voice became more tentative. “As I was about to say, there could be a second guard stationed here by tomorrow. Behind the building. In the meantime, Trelkiny wants the man at the front door to circle the stable periodically, check for anybody trying to slip in or out.
